ABOUT US

At the Mindfulness Association we believe that Mindfulness is a way of life and not a brief intervention for relieving symptoms. Therefore, we provide a long-term systematic training in Mindfulness for life. We train in being present, responding with compassion and seeing deeply our habitual patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This frees us from the conditioning that governs and limits our lives and results in an unfolding of our human potential to make choices about how we live in connection with ourselves and our world.

OUR PEOPLE

Our training is based on the work of Rob Nairn. Rob Nairn is one of the world pioneers in presenting meditation training in a way that is accessible to the Western mind. He was asked to teach meditation by the Dalai Lama. His experience of over forty years of teaching meditation to Westerners has enabled him to develop a unique secular training in Mindfulness, which takes us on a step by step journey into a deepening experience of being present and accepting ourselves as we are.

Our Directors are Heather Regan-Addis, Choden (Sean McGovern) and Nortram-Betram Smith, who are assisted in the management of the Mindfulness Association by Fay Adams, Jane Nygrych and Helen Mathieson. Vin Harris was a founding Board Member and is now manager of our Everyone Project

Our HQ team, who run our administrative function, are Helen Mathieson, Hannah Gilbert, Alan Hughes and Jane Negrych. Jane also runs our membership

Our patrons are Lama Yeshe Rinpoche and Prof. Paul Gilbert, who represent the Buddhist and Western psychologies, which are drawn together in the Mindfulness Association’s secular trainings.

Choje Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche is the Abbot of Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre, Director of the internationally acclaimed Holy Island Project, and the much loved and respected Retreat and Meditation Master for a host of students from around the world.

Prof. Paul Gilbert OBE is the founder and president of the Compassionate Mind Foundation.  Along with a wide range of publications, he authored the seminal book ‘The Compassionate Mind’ and is an internationally recognised researcher, speaker and trainer.

OUR PEOPLE SLIDESHOW

About Rob Nairn

Rob Nairn is one of the world pioneers in presenting Buddhist philosophy and practice in a way that is accessible to the Western mind. In 1980 he resigned as professor of criminology at the University of Cape Town to commit full-time to his spiritual path. His training in psychology and Buddhism-including a four-year cloistered retreat at Samye Ling-enables him to translate ancient Eastern wisdom into concepts that we can understand and apply.

Rob Nairn has developed a unique secular training in mindfulness, which takes us on a step by step journey into a deepening experience of being present and accepting ourselves as we are. The training includes teachings in Western psychological language that provide a context for understanding what is happening in our minds as we practice and working with obstacles that arise.

THE MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION’S EVERYONE PROJECT

This project is a partnership between the Mindfulness Association Ltd and the Hart Knowe Trust, which is a registered charity. The project is managed by Vin Harris, Heather Regan-Addis and Chloe Holmwood.

Despite the current popularity of Mindfulness, which is largely due to its efficacy having been robustly researched, the UK demographic engaging in Mindfulness training is currently overwhelmingly self-funding professionals. This is apparent from those paying to attend the Mindfulness Association’s courses and also from the focus of the recent All Party Parliamentary Group on Mindfulness.

“The Everyone Project” is committed to addressing this imbalance, by offering the eight week Mindfulness Based Living Course to groups who are not otherwise able to access Mindfulness interventions, for financial or other reasons. These groups might include those on a low wage or unemployed, poor and/or isolated elderly people, carers and disability groups.

This Project will oversee the allocation of qualified Mindfulness teachers to deliver the eight week Mindfulness Based Living Course and generate interest by organizing annual weekends for Mindfulness teachers interested in working on this project and by working with its team of over 300 trained Mindfulness teachers, find opportunities that fit the criteria.

As a means of contributing to the growing body of research on the value of Mindfulness practice in general, we will collect data from these courses in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the eight week Mindfulness Based Living Course for these groups. This research, which is overseen by Alan Hughes will focus in particular on wellbeing, dealing with difficulty and the development of values.

The project will provide grant funding towards tutor fees, teacher travel and facility hire costs, manual and CD copying costs, for each course, and to cover administrative fees for the handling and assessing of applications.  Ideally applications will include a contribution of resources from a partnering organisation so that groups who could not otherwise afford it can have access to the benefits of Mindfulness training at no cost.

If you know of a group that would fit the above criteria or if you are a qualified MBLC teacher and would like to apply for funding to teach the MBLC course, please contact Chloe Homewood via email:everyone@mindfulnessassociation.net
