Rob's Retreats

Christmas Retreat: Stabilising the Mind – Mindfulness, Compassion and Insight Training.

Dates: Friday 13th December 2013 – Sunday 5th January 2014

Location: Tara Rokpa Centre, South Africa

Tutors: Rob Nairn, Heather Regan-Addis and Charlie Morley

The unstable mind is overwhelmed by its own reactivity, driven by preference. Mindfulness training alone is unlikely to free us from this state. We also need the broad acceptance of compassion and the precision of insight.

The retreat will focus on sustained practice, compassionate enquiry and clear-seeing investigation as means to stabilise the mind. There will also be a review of basic training in the mindfulness of waking life, dream and sleep. The sustained practice will provide instruction on how to bring mindful awareness to all these stages of our lives.

This retreat is modular with the following options:

  • A 3-week retreat from 13th December to 5th January, progressing from mindfulness to compassion and then to insight training, including the mindfulness of dream and sleep.
  • A 10-day retreat focused on mindfulness practice in daily life, dream and sleep from 13th to 23rd December.
  • A 10-day retreat focused on insight practice from 27th December to 5th Jan.
  • A flexible option to retreat over the Christmas period with teaching sessions focused on compassion practice, for any period between 23rd and 27th December, including optional all night practices.

Group transport will be probably be provided on 13th December and 5th January. It may also be available at the beginning and end of the 10-day options, depending on demand. Participants attending over the shorter Christmas period will need to make their own arrangements to travel to the centre.

The retreat starts at 6pm on the first day, and ends at lunchtime on the last.

A 50% non-refundable deposit will secure your place. See TRC Payment Options on the website to find out the easiest way for you to pay.

Please book early as this will be Rob’s first retreat after his year-long sabbatical, and it is expected to be fully-booked.

About Rob Nairn

Rob is a world respected mindfulness meditation instructor and pioneer in presenting Buddhism in Europe and Africa.
In 1980, Rob Nairn resigned as professor of criminology at the University of Cape Town to commit full-time to his spiritual path. His training in psychology and Buddhism – including a four-year isolation retreat at Samye Ling Tibetan Centre in Scotland – enables him to translate ancient Eastern wisdom into concepts we can understand and apply.

As the representative in Africa for The Venerable Dr Akong Rinpoche, Rob has responsibility for eleven Buddhist centres in four African countries. His main base in Africa is the Tara Rokpa Centre in the Groot Marico District.

His objective is to teach meditation and Tibetan Buddhism to all interested, as well as at graduate and undergraduate level in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Africa and the United States through universities and Dharma Centres.

His unique mix of training and experience in law and psychology as well as having been instructed by eminent meditation teachers enables him to explain traditional Buddhist concepts from a Western psychological perspective.
